Missing SG (so bad!)

Some of you might be very well aware that the Sous Chef is currently lost in the Great Singapore Sale. I was supposed to come with him last Friday and come back home Sunday midnight but my wallet won’t eject my credit card to purchase plane tickets. :cry: I am then left here in MNL, grinning in envy everytime I get an SMS from him on what he’s had for lunch or dinner. *sigh* This is mad torture for someone who’s madly in love with Singapore!

The real thing’s too big for me to kiss!
October 2007

I’ve (naturally) chowed a LOT the last time I was in SG but just for kicks, let me share the most memorable meals I’ve had late last year:

The most complicated soup I’ve ever had from one of the hawkers at the Geylang district
S$5.00

I’ve had this soup with my parents minutes after we’ve settled in our hostel. It was mighty hot when we got out of the building and just our luck, this is the first thing we saw when our stomachs started to grumble like crazy. Shrimp…check! Pork…check! Chicken…check! Ox tail..check! Veggies…check! Wanton…check! Noodles…check! This soup screams halo-halo or chop suey. :)

Grilled NZ Fish on rice with black pepper sauce and 1 side from Long John Silver
S$5.50

This is what I’ve had for brunch the day I met the polar bears (my primary reason to go to SG last year) at the Singapore Zoo! :oops: When you get the chance to dine in LJS, skip what made them popular (the breaded fish and fries) and get this one. The New Zealand cod is too tender and yummy to be classified as fast food!

Where I’ve had the most gluttonous SG dinners!

You won’t miss it when you’re in the Esplanade area

(my very pretty) Mum and (very funny) Dad
dinner’s ~ S$70

Meal wise, have you ever had a “repeat performance”? Like you’ve had the exact banquet you’ve had the day or night before? What you see above is exactly a “repeat performance”. Thanks to a treat of a good friend and former colleague, I wowed my parents with a really delish dinner experience. It was so good I didn’t mind eating the same set two nights in a row (I can even go for three!). My favorite is the fried baby squid (next to mom’s Coke) followed by the stingray (below dad’s beer). The fried baby squid is very much similar to our candied dilis except that you can’t munch on them with your hands as it has sauce and onions while the stingray is a bit on the spicy side. The chicken, beef, and pork tandooris were great contest props. We couldn’t finish our dinner that my dad challenged me to a wager that whoever eats the most tandooris get S$10. :lol: I ended up really bloated for beer with other ex-colleagues at Clark Quay!

No bungee jumping for the bloated lil girl @ Clark Quay :(

To end both feasts at the Makansutra Gluttons Bay, I’ve had (insert name of dessert below):

What do you call this again?

It’s got beans and coconut milk. I forgot what that green thing is but I swear it’s not a dead animal. ;) It’s a really yummy meal ender. Just perfect for those humid summer nights Singapore is popular for.

I was just in Singapore. Wanted to order that at LJS but changed my mind to the fish, chicken, shrimp combo. Now I want to go back and try your recommendation. I hope somebody brings LJS to Manila!

BTW, loved the crispy squid too but found the stingray spicy. Have you tried Maggie’s at Bugis? Great cereal prawns!

Wow, very chica si Mommy ah ;)

I miss Singapore too! My favorite place to eat was Food Republic at Wista Atria. There’s this noodle place na sobrang pinipilahan. They have the best fried prawn noodle and char kway teow. And the chicken rice! Yummmmm.

Damnit, must go to SG soon!

@ysiad
She just went “Ay ang panget ko dyan!! DELETE ASAP!!”
Don’t worry…we’ll get there ;)

@Em Dy
I tried that combo too on a separate trip but won’t vouch for it. Filling but not hearty IMHO.

Ah yes…the stingray is really spicy that it caused me to drink too many beers in one sitting! :mrgreen:

@nina
Harassed pa yan after a long day at the zoo! ;)

Oh my dad wanted to eat there (noodle place) but the line was too long! Maybe next time… :)

@jayvee f.
If I was there you won’t get a bad stomach cause again, I don’t eat roti. I think you’ll get allergies though cause I’ll insist that you try the squid and stingray :oops:

I love the food in Singapore especially the buttered prawns. yum! And hawker stalls Geylang district serves the best meal ever. :) I’m persuading my husband to go to the GSS but to no avail.

Makansutra @gluttonsbay..that’s what gave teh Jayvee stomach upset. Poor guy. Honestly, I found KL food more yummy, especially in the Jalan Alor District. OR maybe I just didn’t explore SG that much, in such a short span of time :P
